Open Screen: The Forum is designed as a community building format that sits between a screening series, conference, and festival.

Open Screen began in 2021 at Public Functionary as gatherings where artists shared works-in-progress. Since then, it has showcased over 100 films and evolved to address gaps in the Twin Cities film ecosystem by creating spaces where BIPOC creators can share their work. Funded in part, by the Arts & Cultural Affairs Department in the City of Minneapolis through the Cultural Districts Art Fund – Open Screen: The Forum marks an expansion in 2025. This program centers QTBIPOC, immigrant, and underrepresented voices in film and photography through an extended series of events focused on storytelling, connection, and cultural exchange.

Open Screen: The Forum features a special collaboration with Cinefilmu, a separate film festival that will hold its main event in November 2025. Cinefilmu itself is a collaborative initiative between multiple artist collectives: Mamá Papaya, TDM5, and YAYASAGA. During Open Screen: The Forum, Cinefilmu will curate scenic installations exploring themes of kinship.The installations will stay on view during open hours for Art-A-Whirl weekend (May 16-18).

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

Film screenings include All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, the debut feature by Raven Jackson. Released by A24 after its Sundance premiere, the film traces the life of a Black woman in Mississippi through quiet, poetic scenes—holding space for memory, grief, and love. The film reflects the kind of layered, intentional storytelling that The Forum was created to support.

The Forum is rooted in the urgency of this moment—for filmmakers, photographers, and artists who use image-making as a means of connection, resistance, and cultural storytelling. In the face of renewed threats to civil rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom of expression, The Forum offers space to gather, reflect, and respond. Programming speaks to all facets of making work—from political urgency to what it takes to make the work. Sessions range from panels on documenting social movements, to hands-on workshops in Steadicam operation and cyanotype patch printing as protest, to conversations about how to get a film financed and produced. Together, they reflect the many ways artists create, build, and push back.

Short film blocks programmed by local filmmakers highlight work from queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Hmong artists—spotlighting both new voices and more established makers across a wide range of styles and approaches. These films are bold, intimate, funny, devastating—each with its own language, all connected by a shared refusal to be overlooked.

Throughout the festival, Cinefilmu and YAYASAGA will present a scenic art installation, Granny’s House, that invites rest, celebration, and care. The installation is a holding space for the gathering itself—a place to land, to be with one another, and to remember why we come together in the first place.

Art-A-Whirl is the largest open studio tour in the country, which happens annually throughout Northeast Minneapolis the third weekend of May. This will be the 30th year!

Over 1,600 NEMAA member artists, galleries, and businesses participate across all of Northeast Minneapolis at over 100 locations. Art-A-Whirl is a fantastic way to connect with artists in their own spaces, enjoy demonstrations and interactive activities, listen to live music, and enjoy local restaurants and breweries. The Indigenous Arts and Crafts Fair will take place at Bloomington Civic Plaza in Bloomington on Sunday, May 18 from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will feature Indigenous Artists selling a wide variety of traditional art. Scheduled performance for Native Flute playing and Hoop Dancing, as well as hands-on games and activities in addition to resource tables. Several Indigenous food trucks will be on site as well. 

The Fair is a partnership between Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Bloomington Schools American Indian  Education Program. Event is free to attend.

The artOPENer Tour is held each year and provides an outstanding opportunity to visit an eclectic mix of diverse artists’ studios, nestled in the scenic St. Croix Valley. The event ends with a dedication of the Wado Gardens, a native plant rain garden with beautiful signs by Graci Horne highlighting the importance of the plants to Dakota and Ojibwe culture. "Wado" is Cherokee for "thank you."

Wil Natzel’s Superfluity is an interactive field of inflatable tubes that invites participants to tilt, move, and engage with them, activating responsive lighting and sound to create public spaces through a queer lens of architecture. Clad in vibrant neon day-glow mesh fabric, these playful structures shimmer with movement and color, transforming the environment into a dynamic landscape of touch, light, and sound.

Inspired by underground clubs, hidden gathering spots, and other queer landscapes, Superfluity fosters connection and dialogue through shared sensory experience. It acts as a dynamic mixing place, blending strangers, sparking spontaneous interactions, and a sense of wonder and celebration.

This inaugural version of Superfluity debuts at Twin Cities Pride Festival 2025 in Loring Park, Minneapolis, one of nation’s largest free Pride festival, running June 28–29 and welcoming over 650,000 annual visitors. As a celebration of queer visibility, joy, and collective imagination, Superfluity offers an open, vibrant space for play and presence in the heart of the city

Art at St. Kate’s is one of the finest one-day outdoor art fairs in Saint Paul. It is located on the beautiful triangular green space at Cleveland and Randolph Avenues on the Saint Paul campus of St. Catherine University.

Art at St. Kate’s features quality work by 100 juried artists who create and sell fine crafts including clay, fiber, glass, leather, jewelry, metal, paper, wood, mixed media, as well as fine arts including painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. This art fair has everything from leather handbags, cloisonné pendants, and stained glass to hand-woven scarves, wood and copper birdhouses, woodcut prints, acrylic and oil paintings, collages, original cards, metal sculptures, quilts, hand-blown glass, hand-made paper, ceramic vases, plates, and mugs.

The Greenway Glow is a community Arts Festival via Bike!

WOW! It’s LoLa Art Crawl’s 16th year! The League of Longfellow Artists is thrilled yet again to invite you to visit more than 100 artists at the 50+ sites throughout the Greater Longfellow neighborhood in south Minneapolis. Take a self-guided tour through artists’ homes and area businesses, and bring some art home with you. The 2025 LoLa Art Crawl will be held on Saturday, September 20th, and Sunday, September 21st. Hours on both days are from 10 am to 4 pm. Rain or shine. This is very much a family and bicycle friendly event. Plus, it’s completely free to attend. As always all are welcome. Be on the lookout for the yellow LoLa signs and colorful directory maps at businesses in the Greater Longfellow area. Also, you can go to lolaart.org to find the directory and map!

The League of Longfellow Artists (LoLa) is a nonprofit organization and voluntary association of artists who live/work/have a connection to the Longfellow neighborhood. Greater Longfellow, Minneapolis is bordered by the Midtown Greenway, Minnehaha Falls, Hiawatha Avenue and the Mississippi River.

Art on The Edge is a one-of-a-kind festival where the visual arts meet the metaphysical. Experience a vibrant day filled with creativity and connection, featuring painters, potters, jewelry designers, and more alongside gifted vendors offering tarot readings, reiki, henna art, crystals, and so much more. Highlights include engaging artist demonstrations, delicious food trucks, a heartwarming Pet Adoption Event from 12 PM – 2 PM, and a Silent Auction with a portion of proceeds benefiting our adoption partner, PetHaven of Minnesota.
