STILL LIFE | Alek Buzhaker

For Alek Buzhaker, still life is everywhere — flowers and fruit, glass and ceramics, fabric and metal, the tactile beauty of the objects that surround us each day. Drawing profound inspiration from the Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th-century Golden Age, Buzhaker brings their timeless command of light and shadow into compositions that are entirely his own. Each canvas is a study in harmony — of color, texture, and the delicate interplay of light. This exhibition gathers recent work, including new pieces created since his acclaimed 2022 solo exhibition at The Museum of Russian Art, in a celebration of a genre he has devoted his life as an artist to perfecting.

About the Artist:
Alek Buzhaker was born in Simferopol, Crimea, in 1947 and raised in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), where his passion for art took root. He received his professional training at the renowned Mukhina College of Art and Design (now the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design), graduating in 1971. He emigrated to the United States in 1978, and has been a longtime resident of the Twin Cities, where he built a career in graphic design and advertising. In recent years, he has returned to his first love, traditional painting, finding fresh inspiration in the beauty of his everyday surroundings.
