Groveland Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, Sense of Place.  This exhibition was curated in collaboration with the Minnesota Conservation Volunteermagazine. The show coincides with the November-December 2018 Sense of Place edition of this popular magazine which is published by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  Both the magazine and the exhibition will feature artwork by eleven Groveland Gallery artists each of whose artwork takes inspiration from the natural world that surrounds us and defines Minnesota.  Included in the exhibition will be work by Joshua Cunningham, Paula Schuette Kraemer, Tom Maakestad, Barbara McIlrath, William Murray, Carl Oltvedt, Amy Rice, Dan & Lee Ross, Gaylord Schanilec, Clara Ueland, and Larry Welo.

While each artist works in different styles - from William Murray’s photorealist watercolors to Dan and Lee Ross’s abstracted monoprints, and various mediums including Larry Welo’s etchings, Amy Rice’s collage and Clara Ueland’s color intaglio prints - they all derive their subject material from nature and our observation of it.  Paula Schuette Kraemer’s prints depict wolves discovered in the woods at night, Joshua Cunningham portrays the quiet landscapes and patterns of Minnesota farmlands, Tom Maakestad has painted the drama of the Boundary Waters after a fire, and Barbara McIlrath’s paintings feature the water’s edge along Lake Pepin. Others like Carl Oltvedt’s portraits of yellow headed blackbirds in flight and Gaylord Schanilec’s meticulous examination of a white bass reveal the exquisite beauty of our native flora and fauna.

Artists will be present at the opening reception Saturday, December 1st from 12-5 pm. The opening reception and exhibition run concurrently with Root Down, a solo show of new work by Amy Rice. Both shows continue through January 19, 2019. There will also be a panel discussion about Art in Nature on January 12th at 2:00 pm.  For more information please call 612-377-7800 or visit www.grovelandgallery.com.
