Opening Reception
An opening night reception from 6–8 PM on Saturday, June 20, 2026, celebrates the debut of three new exhibitions at Praxis Gallery & Photo Arts Center in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis.
This event is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to meet exhibiting artists and fellow photography enthusiasts while exploring contemporary photographic art and enjoying complimentary refreshments.
The opening includes two juried exhibitions examining the expressive possibilities of black & white and color photography, alongside a special historical exhibition revisiting the work of Pauline Kruger Hamilton, a Minneapolis artist whose transition from painting to photography led to an international portrait career that has largely been overlooked by history.
New! Gallery 1: BLACK & WHITE
Black & white photography distills the image to its essential elements. Without the presence of color, attention shifts to light, shadow, composition, and the relationships between forms. Tonal range, texture, contrast, and spatial structure become primary tools for visual expression.
New! Gallery 2: THE LIFE OF COLOR
Color expands the image—introducing mood, temperature, rhythm, and visual tension. It shapes perception, directs attention, and creates relationships between elements within the frame. From subtle tonal harmonies to vivid chromatic contrasts, color functions as both subject and structure.
Gallery 3: Pauline Kruger Hamilton — The End of an Era
Praxis Gallery presents Pauline Kruger Hamilton: The End of an Era, an exhibition marking the rediscovery of a Minneapolis artist whose career bridged painting and early photographic portraiture.
At age forty-one, Hamilton left Minneapolis for Vienna, where she began working as a photographer's assistant and quickly established herself as one of Europe's sought-after portrait photographers. Following her death in 1918, her work largely disappeared from public view.
This exhibition reintroduces Hamilton's photographs to contemporary audiences and offers a renewed look at her contribution to photographic history.
Gallery Hours:
Saturdays Noon–5 PM and by appointment during exhibition dates.
