Gradual Ascent is a year-long project that invited twelve photographers to reflect on obstacles, changes, and joys throughout one particular month.
The month-long format provided an opportunity to share the ebb and flow of how individuals processed and found their way during the second year of the pandemic. Their perspectives are an acknowledgment of our varied and ever-changing situations, offering moments of connection and meaning as we slowly emerged from a time of great uncertainty.
Originally exhibited online, the physical version of this project acknowledges an ongoing emergence and the role physicality plays in connection. Being in a physical space with other bodies and physical prints instead of illuminated pixels creates a different kind of engagement for the viewer. It also creates a new context for the work as a whole that can be experienced collectively, both condensing time and expanding it. Graduate Ascent invites viewers to slow down and reflect on particular moments as we move forward through the next stage of the pandemic.
