Art Through The Ages

Art Through The Ages

The community is invited to experience "Art Through The Ages," a vibrant art showcase featuring works created by local residents through a series of accessible painting classes. This exhibition, unified by the theme "Twin Cities Reflections," celebrates the power of art to connect, express, and foster personal growth within the community.

The project was spearheaded by Tamina Muhammad, an award-winning artist and illustrator residing in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Known for her passion for making art accessible to everyone, she brings her experience as a professional, internationally recognized face and body artist to the community. Her work often reflects her multicultural heritage and is influenced by motherhood and her time in the Southwest. With the support of a grant from The Minnesota State Arts Board and Legacy Fund, Tamina launched the "Art to the Community Through Paint Classes" initiative.

"My journey as an artist has always been deeply rooted in the belief that art is a powerful tool for connection, expression, and personal growth," states Tamina. "The decision to offer these classes stemmed from a desire to share my passion and make art accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or perceived skill level."

The classes were designed to break down barriers, encouraging individuals to explore their creativity in a supportive environment. "I've often heard people say, 'I'm not artistic' or 'I can't even draw a stick figure,'" Tamina notes. "My response is always the same: creativity isn't about innate talent; it's about willingness to explore, experiment, and enjoy the process." The program provided a space for participants to take risks, make mistakes, and celebrate their unique perspectives, fostering mindfulness and self-discovery.

The impact on participants has been profound. Many shared that it was their first time creating or publicly sharing their art, leading to a deeper sense of self-worth, new friendships, and a broader appreciation of others' lived experiences. One participant enthusiastically shared, “I never thought I could paint like this and get an opportunity to showcase my work like a real artist! Seeing my work hanging in a gallery next to my neighbor is an honor that I thank you for.” Another expressed, “Being a part of these classes makes me want to continue experimenting with painting with confidence.” The joy of shared creativity was also a common sentiment, with comments like, “I enjoy being around others painting together; it’s a beautiful thing,” and “I want to come to every class, this is so much fun.” The showcase provides a vital opportunity for participants to share their accomplishments and experience the pride of exhibiting their work.

Attendees of "Art Through The Ages" can expect a resonant journey through paintings that reflect Minnesota’s diverse themes, including nature's beauty, travel, historic landmarks, landscapes, changing seasons, and moments of pleasure and joy. The exhibition is designed to be interactive and inclusive, encouraging dialogue, empathy, and reflection among guests. Organizers hope that visitors will leave feeling more connected to their community and inspired to contribute their own voices and experiences through art.

Ultimately, the inspiration behind this project is the belief that art enriches lives and strengthens communities. By providing a welcoming space for creative exploration, the initiative aimed not only to teach painting techniques but also to spark joy, build confidence, and foster a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of artistic expression within the community.
