Visceral Commodity - Alan Gerlach

Visceral Commodity - Alan Gerlach

A one night show featuring large format photography of the detritus of the Minneapolis milling industry by Alan Gerlach

Visceral Commodity investigates the charged weight of the layers of history, labor, machinery, architecture, and grit present in the detritus of the Minneapolis milling industry. Gerlach works in and around the abandoned and repurposed Minneapolis mills: building and using room-size pinhole cameras, making large format photographs – often where light must be hand-painted into the dark scenes, and using materials directly from the space to make new objects and compositions. A new narrative is built where memories, connections and material dialogue create a non-linear map where time becomes a fluid medium and space and history are felt on a visceral level.

About The Artist
Alan Gerlach is a Minneapolis-based artist and filmmaker. Physical exploration spurs his practice and informs new visual narratives he creates from fragmented histories of space, material, industry and labor. Gerlach's work has been shown in Montréal, Toronto, Portland, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Alan Gerlach is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
