Ada Friedman's art practice celebrates many tethered webs, including marks of studio process and circumstance, the residue of everyday life, and the ghosts of artists who have influenced her. Rooted in routine and ritual, boundary lines are irrelevant in the ecosystem of Friedman’s living, often itinerant studio. The drawings and paintings share the process of their own making through archival and material research and personal everyday encounters - journal writing, poetry, observations of light changing, collected objects traced, her cat. Layering mark-making, language, and studio-accumulation, her paintings topologically build upon themselves and simultaneously become a score for a play. Her rejection of creative distinction is paired with her questioning of temporal categorization. Friedman’s work has no end point, as the work of world-building never ends.  Transparent, vulnerable and generous, Ada’s work reveals the processes and stories of her work’s making, a multidirectional and nonlinear expression of space as everywhere and time as both everything and meaningless beyond the moment.

For her first exhibition with David Petersen Gallery, Friedman presents Surrender Dorothy, a selection of drawings, paintings, and ceramics. Read the full text for the exhibition here.
