North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) is proud to showcase “Spiraling Upwards: Encaustic Mixed Media by Kathleen Kvern,” in the Joseph Gazzuolo Gallery.
The selection of hand-crafted encaustic mixed media uses cardboard and gold leaf to turn discarded materials into layered, luminous compositions that celebrate optimism and possibility.
According to the Museum of Encaustic Art, encaustic mixed media is an art technique that uses more than one material, including paper or photography, with a fusing process, and always contains one or more additional materials. Encaustic painting is an ancient painting technique that combines beeswax, Dammar resin, and then either oil paint or natural powdered pigments to give it color.
Kathleen Kvern is an abstract painter based in Minneapolis with a studio at the Grain Belt Bottling House in Northeast Minneapolis. She works primarily in encaustic and mixed media, and her work has been juried into exhibitions at the Nicolet College Art Gallery, Northfield Art Gallery, Artistry at the Bloomington Center for the Arts, and Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition, among others.
Kathleen has been featured in Wax Fusion, a digital publication of International Encaustic Artists, and she was the recipient of the 2024 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist grant and the 2019 Emerging Artists Grant from the International Encaustic Association.
