Hopkins Center for the Arts is proud to present Souls, an exhibition of silverpoint drawings by Tom Hessel in the HCA Upper Lobby Gallery.
In his delicate silverpoint drawings, Tom Hessel aims to capture some of the character and dignity that is a part of every person. His art means to express something more than a likeness- revealing something about an individual’s personality, or to capture a feeling of their situation at that moment in time. In this way the viewer might experience a universal and timeless connection to the image without personal knowledge of the subject.
About the Artist:
TOM HESSEL is a Twin Cities artist specializing in silverpoint drawing. Using a mechanical pencil loaded with a 22 gauge wire of sterling silver, he crafts images utilizing line and crosshatching to describe tonal values. Silverpoint requires a smooth, hard surface, his preferred ground is hardboard prepared with gesso and sanded level. An unforgiving medium, silverpoint drawing requires practice and patience to master, as it can’t be easily erased like other drawing mediums. Over time, the silver oxides, resulting in a uniquely rich, warm patina unlike any other medium.
