Sketches into Paintings | Steven Levin

"Sketches into Paintings" will feature a rare look at Steven Levin's process, featuring selections from his personal collection of pieces created to prepare for his final paintings.

Steven Levin’s evocative works offer a unique vision to traditional and contemporary subjects. There is a discernible resonance here with the motifs of a classical painter but there is also a modern current to the works that is at times whimsical and always compelling..

'A painting, a work of art always begins with an idea in the artist’s mind. The difficulty for an artist is getting the idea from the mind onto the canvas as a finished work while retaining the thing that inspired you in the first place.  The sketch is the bridge between the artist’s imagination and the finished work. This show of paintings offers a thematic view of over 50 of these sketches and some of the finished works that resulted from them. It’s a glimpse into my working process, which as you’ll see is rarely a straight line.' - Steven J. Levin

Levin has exhibited widely and taken part in significant group and solo shows in San Francisco, New York, London, Beijing, and Barcelona. He has been featured on the cover of American Artist Magazine and also has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes in national competitions including the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Allied Artists of America, the Portrait Institute, American Artist Magazine, the Artist’s Magazine, the Oil Painters of America and the American Artists Professional League. Most recently, he is the Third Prize recipient for the ARC 2024 Salon in the still life category.
