Hopkins Center for the Arts is proud to present Recollection | Re-Collection, an exhibition of work by Nathan Stromberg in the HCA First Floor Lobby Gallery.
Nathan Stromberg's imagery consists of instantly recognizable period objects built of dense collages of vintage magazines and books. In this body of work he navigates and comments on the historical space of post-war America.
Through his process of making archival images into re-contextualized artworks, Stromberg explores the past and its implications for the present. His images communicate across decades, eliciting a wide range of viewer responses, from feelings of nostalgia and longing for lost times to feelings of repression and skepticism. The action of slowly remaking photographic source material into a new image compels the viewer to reconsider what is depicted and search for its inherent meaning. The iconic object is given fresh life in a new context to comment on the ever-changing American identity.
