Postcard Pocket Notebook: Collaboration & Exchange

Postcard Pocket Notebook: Collaboration & Exchange

MCBA hosts a workshop with Shift-lab members Katie Baldwin, Denise Bookwalter, Sarah Bryant, and Macy Chadwick

Exchange ideas, make new connections, and forge paths together in this collaborative workshop. Make an artist’s book containing language paired with mark-making exploration. Methods used for image-making are non-toxic, do not require equipment or complex setup, and are ideal for home studios and community engagement activities.

Unlike traditional workshops, participants will be divided into groups and move from station to station, building their projects iteratively as they progress. At each station, Shift-lab members Katie Baldwin, Denise Bookwalter, Sarah Bryant, and Macy Chadwick will demonstrate relief printing, pochoir, writing, and bookbinding techniques with time to work with individuals on their projects over 90-minute intervals.

As participants move from station to station, they will deepen the complexity of their projects. Each participant will take home a folded and bound notebook pocket-structure. The book is entirely made of paper and will contain content created during the workshop including postcard-size examples of techniques, instructions, and mark-making explorations.

The result will be an active, kinetic, and collaborative experience! We hope for connections between participants, variable explorations of relief and pochoir, and unexpected language emerging from experimental writing exercises. Come with a current artistic collaborator or join new collaborators in this in-person workshop.

Katie Baldwin, Denise Bookwalter, Sarah Bryant, and Macy Chadwick offer this workshop as Shift-lab, a collaborative, five-woman collective aiming to expand dialogue through exhibitions and projects that investigate narrative, communication, and the book. This workshop is offered in coordination with Shift-lab’s exhibition at MCBA including the group’s fifth member, Tricia Treacy. The exhibition is on view in MCBA’s Main Gallery, February 17 through June 1, with a reception on Friday, March 8.
