Possibilities

A group show in a new alternative gallery presents objects in the latent stages of creation

IC: Elizabeth Garvey

There are no finished artworks in this exhibit. Instead it showcases latency, possibilities, potential. The ‘objects’ presented (found objects, notes, sketches, prototypes, works in progress, collages, video segments, collections, etc.) will inspire and/or become finished works provided the artists can figure out how to make that happen. In alchemy terms, this exhibition shows you the base metals and mixtures that the artists hope will transform into gold.

Presenting objects in the latent stages of creation provides a unique opportunity for visitors to imagine as the artists do, before the final form is decided on and realized. It is a chance to be in the presence of things with potential, to pause a moment in the company of promise. Perhaps this exhibition extends to audiences the ‘environmentalism of the imagination’ that Mathew Zapruder refers to for poets in his book, Why Poetry where he discusses the importance of a creative space alive with possibilities because it is sheltered from critique and outside events.

The magic of art is often realized in its agency and without answers. This is certainly the case here, where even the form of that agency is up for speculation.

About the Artwork:

Katayoun Amjadi will present some experiments combining hand-made bricks and bread that have been fired/baked together along with architectural drawings for an installation idea on the topic of daily life amidst political instability.

Hallie Bahn will present drawings and a prototype for one of her signature theatrical sets populated by video animation.

Candace Davis will display a series of photographs of her ancestor’s gravestones that she has taken as the basis of an as-of-yet undetermined project.

Pete Driessen will display drawings and the raw materials –pieces of a boat dock and fishing boat chairs -for a sculptural installation that he has not yet produced.

John Fleischer will show a flexible racking system that holds parts, mock-ups, samples, and studio objects that he uses to loosen up his own creativity.

Elizabeth Garvey will present a collection of sketches, mock-ups, and experiments from her self-centric body-nature ruminations.

Tracy Krumm will share her recent experiments that translate crocheted doilies into larger laser cut objects made out of wood and other materials.

Danny McCarthy will show a series of cartoon drawings with appropriated ‘white-boy’ characters that have been irreverently doctored with evidence of their violent tendencies.

Gudrun Lock will show two video segments, one of fire, one of sea-life for an unrealized project that smacks of climate change via the archetypal fire and water.

Zoe Cinel will leave a telephone in the gallery with a glam backdrop and an array of photo-cards of her in alien dress along American roadways for visitors to call her and talk about what she is trying to figure out.

John Schuerman will share initial notes and prototypes for future landscape documentary projects.
