Northern Watercolors | William Murray

Northern Watercolors | William Murray

Groveland Gallery announces Northern Watercolors, a short-run, pop-up exhibition of new works by William Murray.

Running just two weeks, and opening November 9, the show will feature twelve framed paintings depicting Northern Minnesota and the northern Great Lakes. These small watercolors will be accompanied by additional unframed paintings. Work will be sold from the show and refreshed throughout the run of the pop-up event.

William Murray was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Before beginning his painting career, Murray served in the Coast Guard on the Great Lakes and trapped lobster in Nova Scotia. Having sailed for four years on Lakes Michigan and Superior on an ice breaker and a search and rescue vessel, the artist is no stranger to the wild and challenging landscape of the North.

The BWCA region in particular has inspired Murray for many years, as he has dedicated himself to capturing the area in watercolor. Murray understates the stunning nature of the views, choosing storm clouds and nightfall over sunny, shimmering lakes. Through his sublime recounting of the shape of the landscape and weight of the weather, Murray’s work speaks to a spaciousness which belies the small scale of the paintings.

The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, November 9th from 3-4:30 pm. This special, two-week exhibition continues through November 23, 2024.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12-5 pm
