Mystery Spot | Mary Gibney

The name of the show is Mystery Spot, which brings to mind the gravity defying zones of kitschy tourist attractions but also the veil between worlds, possibly between life and death or whatever comes after consciousness. There are bar scenes where the bartender is keeping her eye on some untrustworthy patrons, but also scenes of undefined spaces that question.. What do we really know? What are we searching for? Why is there always a cat there?

These paintings are about searching/seeking in a time of unsteadiness. Spinning the wheel of fortune for some sort of guidance, surrounded by slightly threatening ghostly creatures. Searching for meaning in an off-kilter zone between reality and unreason, or possibly life and death. Questing for knowledge.. of what kind I can't say.. I painted these but they are pulled from my subconscious. I have no firm interpretation or meaning to offer. They are in-between places, where you can't quite trust your perceptions.
