Material Culture
Our question is simple: How does fabric move?
It moves through the body. A garment changes how we walk, how we stand, and how others see us. Cloth is the first thing we put on in the morning and one of the last things we take off at night.
It moves through culture. Patterns, techniques, and colors travel across oceans and generations. A weaving tradition is carried from one continent to another. A grandmother teaches a stitch. A style born on a street corner ends up on a runway.
It also moves through space. Fabric hangs, drapes, billows, and shifts with the air in a room. It responds to light, and it changes as you walk around it.
From the loom to the runway, textiles carry who we are. Material Culture brings fashion, craft, and fine art together in one room. These three worlds are too often kept apart. Here they speak to each other, and to audiences of many perspectives and backgrounds.
THE CENTERPIECE
At the center of the exhibition, fabric banners will hang from the gallery ceiling. Visitors will walk beneath and among them. In that space, cloth stops being an object you look at and becomes the atmosphere you stand inside, a single shared moment in the room.
Through fashion design, weaving, embroidery, fabric, and textile-based visual art, this exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists working across disciplines and materials. Each artist demonstrates how textiles can move beyond function to become powerful forms of storytelling, craftsmanship, and cultural expression.
We invite you to experience the textures, techniques, and stories woven throughout Material Culture, on view at the Roho Collective Gallery & Cultural Arts Center from
