Maneuver

In David Malcolm Scott's paintings he explores the dimensions of abstraction. His aim is for a coherent balance between color, line, shape, and the creative mist within his head. Sketches and preliminary plans are not part of his program. Instinct is a major part of the process, pieces often starting with a vague idea...a certain color, a line, a brush stroke laid on a new surface or even a title. For years, when he painted landscapes and scrolls,  sketches, reading and research were an important part of the work.  Yet, in his abstract work, the mantra has been not to ponder, but to make a move. He visually listens to what the painting is saying and reacts..."Lay down a line or another wash of color - GO!" His process continues to be informed by a life with brush, pencil, canvas, paper, and a lot of photography interwoven with a history of architectural thought and design.

Duane Ditty says of his work, “I see painting as a very physical act, and my paintings as a direct example of the creative process, containing within them the record of their realization and implementation. I am interested in separating my work from the imposing forces of commercial signification, from the things that attempt to undermine indeterminate meaning. My work offers a reprieve from cluttered spaces and relentless action. Art, I believe, is separate from day-to-day existence. Art is a representation of thought without the necessity of explicit function. My work retains distance from the noise of the outside world and allows for a contemplative respite. My paintings invite the viewer to relate on an intuitive and spontaneous level; without irony or jest they manifest a gravity and beauty often absent in our daily lives.”
