Inherit Light: An Evolutionary Practice of Love Consciousness

Inherit Light: An Evolutionary Practice of Love Consciousness

A solo exhibition and series of interactive events that invites the community into Sangodare’s intergenerational practice of presence through multi-sensory installations, comprised of digital and material artifacts.

The Department of Art at the University of Minnesota presents, Inherit Light: An Evolutionary Practice of Love Consciousness, a physical and sonic representation of the tools and legacies from Sangodare’s daily spiritual practices as a filmmaker, composer, visual artist and priest of Sango. It is a cross-disciplinary exploration of themes such as queer identities, transgressing gender, repetition, cycles of life and spiritual development, love and inheritance. The exhibition itself is an invitation to experience your own evolution and Sangodare’s sermons, interactive altars and collective composing inside of a multi-sensory dome.

The month long journey of Inherit Light: An Evolutionary Practice of Love Consciousness invites community to experience a number of interactive events featuring Black feminist sermons and presents a wide range of media created by Sangodare including videos, audio recordings, sculptures, prints, adornment, ceiling hangings, installations and objects that incorporate electronics and light. Conceptually, this exhibition includes singing and sermonic practices from Sangodare’s thick familial legacy from the Black Baptist church in the South, traditional African spiritualities maintained in diaspora and sacred space as healing space.

Sangodare’s art and spiritual practice exist in collaboration; especially with Sista Docta Alexis Pauline Gumbs and also beloved community including Courtney Reid-Eaton as consulting curator, Anthonette Elix Wallace as mother, fashion designer and upholsterer, Jamez Smith as intergalactic DJ, Joie Lou Shakur as apprentice and Tierra (TK) Anderson as production assistant. About Sangodare

As a visual artist, filmmaker, composer and preacher, Sangodare creates media and experiences for healing and transformation. As artist in residence in the Art department at UMN and visiting faculty in Film Studies at Lawrence University, Sangodare facilitates interactive spaces for testimony, transformation and transcendence inside and outside of classroom spaces. Sangodare’s work builds on familial legacies from three generations of Black Baptist preachers and church workers serving communities in the South and the legacies of Black Feminism.
