Hanna Hur Solo Exhibition

Hanna Hur Solo Exhibition

TOA Presents welcomes Kristina Kite Gallery as the next gallery in residence for a solo exhibition of new and recent paintings and drawings by artist Hanna Hur

TOA Presents is thrilled to host Kristina Kite Gallery as the next gallery in residence, for a solo exhibition by artist Hanna Hur. On view through Thursday, April 13, the exhibition features five grid-based paintings, alongside a selection of drawings and a work from the artist’s ongoing body of site-specific, copper chainmaille installations.

About the Artist

Hanna Hur makes paintings using flashe, acrylic paint and color pencil, as well as intricate drawings and copper chainmail sculptural works. The process of making her repetitive compositions, whether on canvas or in copper, is one of meditation and obsessive focus. Against a wash of paint, the carefully drawn circles and squares in her works on canvas vibrate and hum with a soft energy. Motifs repeat over time throughout the works – spirals, flowers and what Hur has named “the muse” – in different situations, building sentience. The perceptual puzzles presented by the works ensnare our vision and invite us into their portals of transcendence.

Hanna Hur lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from UCLA in 2019. Recent exhibitions include Shadow Tracer: Works on Paper at Aspen Art Museum, Drawing Down the Moon, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Red Ecstatic, Kristina Kite Gallery, Los Angeles; and The Inconstant World, Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. 32 Drawings, a monograph of Hur’s works on paper, was published in 2022 by Kristina Kite Gallery.

About Kristina Kite Gallery

Kristina Kite Gallery opened in 2017 with a site-specific exhibition by Nancy Lupo, who chose the historic bank building in the Los Angeles neighborhood of West Adams as one address among several that comprised her multi-faceted debut solo show. Upon the closing of Lupo’s exhibition, the space was formally inaugurated as the home of Kristina Kite Gallery. The exhibitions that followed focused primarily on established artists based in Los Angeles or with deep connections to the city, such as Lisa Lapinski, Michael Queenland and Nicole Miller. The gallery continues to support ambitious projects by formally and conceptually significant artists, as well as introduce emerging artists, such as Hanna Hur and Jasper Marsalis, into this rigorous context. As the gallery enters its sixth year, it continues to expand the parameters of its programming and to promote work that is both challenging and inspiring to our deeply engaged community.
