Funreal | Natalie Mazorol
Natalie Mazorol’s paintings are certainly enjoying themselves. While one can be forgiven for humoring their anatomical infidelities or far-from-conventional facial features, it would be a mistake to dismiss their economy of means as simply crude or lacking depth. Any perceived reduction is instead a relocation of complexity. While the faces get a few marks, the bodies get everything else, layer over layer, scraped, covered, redone and redone. Which is to say the mind is still there, just not behind the eyes. It’s in the paint, on the body. The face is where she stops deciding. The body is where she can’t, creating a figurative event within an abstraction. Paint is both what she emerges from and a vessel for an intensity she can’t fully explain. Unfettered but not imprecise, Mazorol reduces representation until representation and abstraction are the same activity. Maybe her figures aren’t so crude after all. They’ve simply stopped cooperating.
Funreal is Natalie Mazorol’s first exhibition with the gallery.
