Bockley Gallery presents For Jim With Love: Collection of a Storyteller, an exhibition and fundraising event featuring selections from the Jim Denomie Collection.
In collaboration with the Jim Denomie Estate and the Jim Denomie Memorial Scholarship, Bockley Gallery is pleased to celebrate and share Jim’s collection with the public. Throughout Jim’s life, he purchased, traded and was gifted hundreds of artworks from friends, colleagues, relatives, mentors, students, and strangers near and far. At Jim’s request, nearly all his collection will be exhibited, and a large selection will be for sale to benefit his namesake scholarship for emerging Native artists. In the spirit of Jim’s Garage Sale events, designated artworks will be affordable ($100, $300, or $500) with the desire to find their next good home.
The exhibition title comes from a monoprint gifted to Jim by his dear friend, fellow artist & fellow collector, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. Her work will be exhibited alongside many favorite Minnesota artists and others, including: Ta-coumba T. Aiken, Regan Balzer, Rick Bartow, Marwin Begaye, Frank Big Bear, Douglas Beasley, Dick Brewer, Julie Buffalohead, Delphina Cadoré, Andrea Carlson, Steven Carlyle Moore, Teresa Cox, Lauren dela Roche, Francisca Delgado, Mary Esch, Joe Feddersen, David Feinberg, Luis Fitch, Pam Gaard, Frank Gaard, Carl Gawboy, Vance Gellert, Joseph Giannetti, Mary Gibney, Ruthann Godollei, Greg Graham, Laura Hallen, Glen Hanson, Kristine Heykants, John Hitchcock, Alexa Horochowski, AE Kalnik, Caitlin Karolczak, Joyce Koskenmaki, Alex Kuno, Anne Labovitz, Mary Jane Mansfield, Stu Mead, Carolyn Lee Anderson, Beth Moore Love, George Morrison, Betty Moynahan, Rachel Mulder, Linda Munn, Jon Neuse, Stuart Nielsen, Keegan Onefoot-Wenkman, Dougie Padilla, Camilo Pardo, Galilee Peaches, Montana Picard, Reda Rackley, Wendy Red Star, Marcela Rodriguez Aguilar, Alexandra Rozenman, Jenny Schmid, Matt Sesow, Joseph H. Jim Denomie (1955–2022) (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) was a prolific artist, creating vividly hued paintings, works on paper, and sculptures that aim a sharply critical lens on the history of Indigenous people and their intersections with mainstream culture, all often laced with his signature humor. The Lyrical Artwork of Jim Denomie at the Minneapolis Institute of Art
(2023–24), Jim Denomie: Challenging the Narrative at the Muskegon Museum of Art (2020–21) and recent group exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Art (forthcoming, 2025), National Gallery of Art in Washington DC (2023–24), and Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, Austria (2021) have highlighted his major works. Denomie’s paintings are found in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, Philbrook Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, Forge Project Collection, KADIST (San Francisco), and many others.
First awarded in July 2022, the Jim Denomie Memorial Scholarship is an annual $10,000 prize recognizing a Native artist who best exemplifies the values Denomie demonstrated in his own career: commitment to excellence, generosity of spirit, and engagement with community. Past recipients include Jonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe), Maggie Thompson (Fond du Lac Ojibwe), and Star WallowingBull (Ojibwe-Arapho). The award is administered by partner All My Relations Arts Gallery/NACDI, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, where Jim Denomie exhibited in the past. The scholarship is completely funded by donations from family, friends, and supporters. Scholarship partners include the Denomie/Wilson family (wife Diane Wilson, children Cheryl Lane, Sheila Umland, Cody Cyson and Jodi Bean), and Bockley Gallery (Todd Bockley) who has been Denomie’s gallerist for more than 15 years and continues to represent the Jim Denomie Estate.
Please support this initiative by making a donation for future awards.
