Fat Lady Folk Tales | Alanna Stapleton
Alanna Stapleton (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Minneapolis. Stapleton makes work that uses humor to explore everyday moments of joy and grief to reveal an understanding of identity and community. Fat Lady Folktales is a series of quilts about institutionalized anti-fatness and hypervisibility, inspired by the experience of being fat in a world determined to exclude larger bodies.
From infrastructure and furniture that doesn’t accommodate larger bodies, to fashion advice that excludes, to common words and phrases that diminish, this work examines and laughs along with commonalities of the fat experience.
