Artist Talk - Creating in Senegal

An artist talk with Christopher E. Harrison and Gregory J. Rose about their collaborative studio sessions in Senegal

Christopher E. Harrison and Gregory J. Rose will share stories about their trip to Dakar, Senegal during their collaborative studio session at Galerie Sobo Bade GAP (Global Arts Project) VII residency in January 2019, and how this experience influenced their practice.
 

The Senegal trip was a part of the GAP (Global Art Project) led by Carly Heyward of the Bay Area. GAP VII Senegal was a residency in which members exhibit and create both collaboratively and with solo works as well as participation from the community. GAP VII happened in  2019.

Christopher E. Harrison is an Ohio native who received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, OH. Harrison currently lives and works in Minneapolis as a visual artist, illustrator and graphic designer where he creates paintings, drawings, sculpture and collage. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions including Obsidian Arts (MN), Nemeth Art Center (MN), Soo Visual Art Center (MN), Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (WI) and Smack Mellon in New York. And he has shown internationally, with group shows in Senegal, Ecuador and the United Kingdom. Harrison has created public art for North Minneapolis as well. His work has been supported with grant funding by Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, the City of Minneapolis and MRAC Next Step. He is currently a Museum Arts Educator at Walker Art Center.​

Gregory J. Rose Born in Easton, Pennsylvania- Gregory is an East Coast native transplanted in the Midwest. Formally educated at The Pennsylvania State University, Gregory received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2000, and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004- both with a concentration in Drawing and Painting. Gregory has been teaching for Minnesota State since 2003 and is in the Fine Arts Faculty at Minneapolis Community and Technical College based in Minneapolis, MN. Gregory has exhibited in New York, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and has begun to build an International career exhibiting in Italy, Mexico and Africa.  Gregory J. Rose has been a creative force working in music and voiceovers for TV commercials; The Fine Arts, Art Education and Community Engagement; serving on both the MADE HERE, MN Panel and Soo Visual Arts Center Curatorial Panel.​
 

GAP is made up of over 30 active members from 16 different countries. GAP uses the mantra of "No Mind" a subconscious way of working. Making something from nothing and it all starts off with a mark.
