CONSTRUCTION + RECONSTRUCTION

This show is a great example of the creative process. It illustrates how these architects and designers review their work in progress and change it to their perfecting eye. The residency will be housed in two galleries; NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory (1730 Madison St NE) and ARTSPACE @JacFLATS (901 18 1/2 Ave NE).

EMILY CLINGAN, MN & COCO MURPHY, MN

Emily and Coco conceived of Girl Club Studio nearly ten years ago on the brink of graduation from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and their post-graduation artistic practice. Frustrated by the machismo and male-dominated painting department while at school, they made space for their collaboration, unique from, and reacting to, their lived experiences as female artists. While frequently giving each other obstructions, or challenges, to respond to, they mirror and reclaim individual hurdles in a playful way. Girl Club Studio works in tandem, simultaneously and apart. They view their work in the lens of painting, at times adding collage, print, and sculptural elements. Our study and emphasis on color is our constant.

PETER GOCHÉ, AMES, IOWA

Goché is an artist, architect and educator. Goché works with the nature of perception and spatial phenomenon in developing his experimental drawing practice. His works provoke a temporal-spatial encounter that understand the simultaneous and complex nature of cerebral and corporeal experience. He is founder and director of Black Contemporary, a rural field station dedicated to the study of experimental drawing and perception. He has co-lead workshops at the Venice Biennale in 2014 and 2018 and mounted multiple exhibitions and lectures on his creative practice and scholarship around the world.

REBECCA KRINKE, MN

Rebecca Krinke has a hybrid life as an artist and Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Her multidisciplinary art-design practice (began with a dream she had as an adult) works across landscape, interior and exterior installation, sculpture, and participatory projects to explore the wonder and terror of living and the times we live in. Using animal, plant, and human forms/worlds, and domestic objects and architectures made, found, or altered – she creates places where dreaming and waking life mix. For her installation at NE Sculpture, called Apport, she will engage the trees outside the gallery by hanging large bundles of artificial blue flowers from their branches to create a portal for dreaming. Apport will be especially otherworldly at night when the tree will be illuminated.

MIKE NESBIT, LA, CA

Mike Nesbit is a fine artist based in Los Angeles. With a background in architecture, his multidisciplinary interests greatly inform his artwork, allowing Nesbit to explore areas between art and architecture with a focus on context, technique, and representation. Nesbit is a founder of the Non-Profit/Artist-Run Space, Maple St. Construct, located in Omaha, Nebraska. Maple St. Construct, is a gallery/residency program that looks to bridge the gap between Los Angeles and The Midwest by providing artists in Los Angeles and The Midwest the resources to create work outside of their typical environments.

THOMAS PRINZ, OMAHA, NE

Thomas Prinz received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a M-ARCH from Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles.. In 1990 Prinz established Arc-Studio to explore the disciplines of art and architecture. He creates works with thoughts of structures as well as paying homage to many past great artists like Giotto. His works are  collages, monotype and digital prints on paper.

BARBARA ROBERTSON, SEATTLE, WA

Seattle based artist Barbara Robertson is known primarily for her work in experimental printmaking. Over the last ten years, she has expanded her practice to include digital animation, projection installations, paintings and mixed media works on paper. For this exhibition she will show a short, animated film that is partly an appreciation for a rapidly changing urban life and questions why we create the specific structures and environment that we live with.

DAVID MALCOLM SCOTT, MN

David Malcolm Scott is an artist and architect whose paintings are informed by a life with brush, pencil, canvas, paper, and photography interwoven with a history of architectural thought and design. Sketches, reading, and research are an important part of creating the works in his Scrolls series that will be on view in Jackson Flats.These long, narrow watercolors evoke timelines and a sense of deep cosmic time moving through epochs until human time begins to be included. It is here where David adds small scroll paintings above and below to reveal memories and dreams of one person’s life, in this case, the artist himself. In this show David will be hanging a 10 foot scroll documenting the Native American spiritual grounds of “Hovenweep” that he witnessed in his travels through Utah.

MAX STEELE, MN

M-ARCH - U of Washington-Seattle

Max has recently relocated from Seattle to the Uptown area of Minneapolis after decades of designing and making magical places for retail and entertainment venues across the globe as an architect and educator. He recently has pivoted to his life-long passion for making photographs and paintings. He is now making unorthodox photo-based montage prints which have been shown nationally.

For CONSTRUCTION + RECONSTRUCTION, Steele has printed his collection, LANDSHIFT, at a scale sized to make them readily available and engaging to the viewer. Hanging from above, larger than life, they are deployed in overlapping planes inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion.
