Caroline Keefe, A Retrospective

As a sculptor, Caroline Keefe works with industrial wool felt, stone, wood, found objects and copper to create gestural and lyrical pieces that are evocative of natural landscape or the geographical elements of that landscape.  Through these sculptures, she explores the cyclical themes of rivers and topography, memory and loss, and death and renewal. A natural phenomenon that inspires her work is how land is formed and changed.  Sediment that is carried by wind, rivers and glaciers become layers of a new landscape that is hidden below more layers only to be revealed again by similar natural forces.

Keefe’s sculptures depict the patterns of a topographic map of land softening into intricate layers and patterns, evoking memories, which fall away and recur. These lines echo one another and reflect the qualities that can be found in one’s memory.  For Keefe, these memories link to specific memories that surround her hometown and neighborhood.
