A Walk On A Clear Night | Tom Miller

A Walk On A Clear Night | Tom Miller

A unique exhibition showcasing a collection of exquisite, one-of-a-kind pinhole photographs by Twin-Cities based pinhole photographer extraordinaire Tom Miller.

The exhibit features two ongoing bodies of work that Tom has been building for several years. The first, “METROPOLITAN RIVERS,” is a series of photos created along the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The photographs follow a common, self-imposed rule that the river must either flow through some part of the image, even if it isn’t visible, or the photo must have been taken near the river, usually within a hundred yards or less. The second body of work, “MINNESOTA TOWNSHIP HALLS,” is a series of portraits and visual essays of township halls throughout the state. Townships are the most localized government entities in the state of Minnesota, extremely close to the people that operate and are served by them. Minnesota has a larger number of organized townships than any other state. The town halls in the exhibit serve as good samples of the different architectural forms that these seats of government utilize, from purpose-built structures to repurposed schoolhouses.

All the images in the exhibition share a special, striking visual quality that derives from two unique photographic techniques: the use of potato chip tins modified to work as pinhole cameras, with 600-micron electron microscope slides serving as apertures; and the printing of the images as negatives, giving the viewer the impression of encountering the scenes while walking on a clear night!
