Rosy Simas — yödoishëndahgwa’geh (a place for rest)

HAIR + NAILS is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Rosy Simas

Editors Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, this exhibition has been postponed. We'll update you when we know more about the new dates.

HAIR + NAILS presents yödoishëndahgwa’geh (a place for rest) - a solo art exhibition of new work by the acclaimed, Minneapolis-based, Seneca (Heron Clan) transdisciplinary artist best known for her dance works for the stage. In yödoishëndahgwa’geh (a place for rest), expect an installation of movement: projected moving image, moving objects, moving bodies.

This is Simas’ first exhibition with HAIR+NAILS. The intersection of dance and the visual arts is a favorite terrain for the gallery which is co-founded and directed by choreographer Kristin Van Loon and visual artist/musician, Ryan Fontaine.

In the artist’s words: “yödoishëndahgwa'geh is a process of deep listening to heal seven generations of ancestors and generations yet to be born. It is a space to rest, take refuge, grieve, and condole.” -Rosy Simas

This immersive installation is an extension of a large-scale dance performance project created by Simas in response to our global loss and the collective need to come together in peace and reconciliation. The physical space for rest for rest and refuge is a work of Native futurities, imagining a world of relational balance with nature and with each other. Simas’ frequent collaborator François Richomme contributes sound composition for the exhibition.

Artist bio:
Rosy Simas (Seneca, Heron Clan) is a transdisciplinary and dance artist who has historically presented her work as a choreographer. Simas’ projects merge movement with media, sound, and objects for stage and installation. She unites cultural concepts and images with scientific and philosophical theories to create work that is literal, abstract, and metaphoric. Her work weaves themes of personal and collective identity with family, sovereignty, equality, and healing. She creates dance work with a team of Native artists and artists of color, driven by movement-vocabularies developed through deep listening.

Simas is a recipient of a Dance/USA Fellowship, Joyce Award from The Joyce Foundation, McKnight Fellowship for Choreography, Guggenheim Creative Arts Fellowship, First People Fund Fellowship, and a Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Fellowship. Her dance works include Weave, Skin(s), and We Wait In The Darkness which have toured Turtle Island and France with the support of NEFA National Dance Project, MAP Fund, and National Performance Network.
