Love Bites

Works by Amelia Biewald

Amelia Biewald creates intricate, provocative worlds combining playfulness with seduction, while maintaining an incredible level of craft. Extensive research into historical narratives and physical materials provides a unique look into layered environments that provoke wonder and desire, yet with potential for menace. She creates intrigues, alternative histories documenting the confluence of myth, history, science and scandal.

For her exhibition at Rosalux, Amelia will construct a large site-specific installation based on a bizarre true story from eighteenth century England: the case of Mary Toft. Toft supposedly gave birth to rabbits, and in the press this British “invasion” took the country by storm. Referencing multiple periods in history, these past waves of hysteria are recontextualized with the new wave of British heavy metal music that crashed in the 1980’s. Def Leppard’s Hysteria topped the charts in 1987. Biewald imagines these rabbit bad boys of rock in a brand new site-specific installation. In Love Bites these animal heavy metal hooligans seemingly race, elongated for speed and sexual prowess.

Biewald giddily intertwines fact and fiction, blurring boundaries between the possible and the impossible. She creates bucolic worlds tinged with mystery, imagination and eerie beauty
