Loose Change

Loose Change

Solo show featuring new work by Minneapolis-based artist Russ White

Loose Change fills two floors at the Hopkins Center for the Arts with new colored pencil drawings inspired by coins. Drawing on the tradition of portraiture on coins, this series of colored pencil busts showcases not presidents or dignitaries but "everyday" people of different ages, races, genders, and abilities.

Drawn photo-realistically but in a variety of wildly vibrant color palettes, these pieces use a warts-and-all approach to finding beauty not only in the individual but in our shared humanity as well. Luscious and painterly in appearance, the portraits re-frame empathy against the backdrop of capital, asking the viewer to consider what truly makes us rich.
