The U of M hosts a four-month-long solo show of colored pencil portraits inspired by coins.
Playing off the tradition of portraiture on coins, this series of colored pencil busts showcases not presidents or dignitaries but "everyday" people of different ages, races, genders, and backgrounds. Drawn photo-realistically but in a variety of wildly vibrant color palettes, these pieces use a warts-and-all approach to find the beauty not only in the individual but in our shared humanity as well.
Many of the people represented here are members of the local Minneapolis arts community as well: printmakers, photographers, installation artists, arts administrators, and more. Luscious and painterly in appearance, these portraits re-frame empathy against the backdrop of capital, asking the viewer to consider what truly makes us rich.
