I Definitely Can See Something | Dan Shaw-Town

I Can Definitely See Something says that movement and change are important words, that perhaps a painting can be thought of as a series of fluid changes, and by that I mean that decisions are visible on the surface, that the mark making is intuitive but each mark begins to inform the next and a pattern inevitably forms, that it’s human nature. On a perceptual level these lines and shapes and colors could refer to a landscape…a body or face even, but these are only projections by the viewer of forms that are interpreted as familiar, but in truth they are pure abstractions. There’s a goal here to activate an exchange between forms and forms of life, between the ‘thing’ itself, that is to say, the tangible object of a painting and the pictorial illusion that a viewer projects onto it.
