At Two You’re at Abstraction

Here, the result of focusing on two or more individuals in a work is ambiguity comprised of observation, disappointment, reaction, and finally, unsettled satisfaction. In this work Anna has dissolved figure/ground relationships into compositions of gestural line and mark, filled with tension between figuration and abstraction, and fluctuation between the ephemeral and the concrete. She works from multiple sources—referencing photographs, direct observation, and other renderings. She combines and translates this information through painting and drawing. This process is part depiction and alteration, so the work hovers between clarity and obscurity. Through this process, Anna is able to reflect on the intersection of identity and humanity.
