A Veiled Cascade

A Veiled Cascade

A 16mm film / sound installation by John Marks

Building on his collaborative expanded cinema work, this installation incorporates multi-channel analog 16mm film projections and sound pieces inspired by and made on Lake Superior's North Shore.

While in a place that embodies beauty and peace for many, Marks is drawn to the laborious processes of analog filmmaking and field recording as a means of further removal  from the hustle of city life and noise of digital culture. Not meant as an act of resistance however, this is an engagement of surrender to one's natural surroundings to honor its power. A meditation of sorts.

To further decelerate this approach to making work, the films are rephotographed, contact printed and hand processed in the darkroom. The sounds are resampled, synthesized, and rearranged in the studio by a modular synthesizer. By presenting these forms together in the gallery this installation emphasizes an intersection where a transformative, experiential space is created.

To further investigate the interconnectedness of experimental moving image and sound, Marks has invited Casey Deming, Jonathan Kaiser and Crystal Myslajek to give hour-long sonic performances along with himself to create a casual sound bath environment with his films during the afternoon of Saturday, April 21st.
