Twilight for a Silent Child, An Installation

A Solo Exhibition by Rachel Girard at Rogue Buddha

Created from ceramic, fabric and leather, the dolls of Rachel Girard both inspire and mystify. Like the Sirens of ages past, the female figures lure the spectator closer with their elegance and charm. Wide eyed with silken hair and red lips, her beauties draw the viewer closer yet as they enchant and beguile. Adorned in luxurious draperies, each doll has it’s own tale to tell and dares you to come close enough to hear.

Inspired by the fables she read as a child, fascination in those stories transcended real life as did the fantasy that enveloped her in the perfect setting of a small isolated Northern Minnesotan town where she nurtured the skills to create her own story. These are the characters. With a child’s imagination under the influence of nightmarish fears that the woods had to offer, an aesthetic of surreal Victorian laudanum induced vision spills into a collection of otherworldly delights. Often disguised in playful beauty, something menacing dwells within the inviting richness of the craft itself.
