The Edge of Water

SPOTLIGHT exhibition of new paintings by Holly Swift

The Edge of Water, a SPOTLIGHT exhibition of new paintings by Holly Swift, opens October 20th at Groveland Gallery. A native of Illinois, Swift received her MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and moved to Minnesota in 1996. Swift’s work can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. This exhibit marks Swift’s first solo show at the Groveland Gallery.

For over 20 years, the North Shore of Lake Superior has been a favorite and frequently visited location for Holly Swift. Abstract and loosely painted on a framework of geometry, Swift’s work knits together scenes of the rugged North Shore landscape. The paintings in this exhibit reveal the many variations of weather and mood which make the North Shore so compelling. At times, a soft palette illustrates the calm of a placid day. In other paintings, the interaction of line and color accentuate the fierce temperament of the wilderness. More than illustrations of a landscape, these paintings evoke the experience of Lake Superior and the surrounding area.

The opening reception and exhibition runs concurrently with Along the Shoreline by Kit Wilson.
