An exhibition of 60 life sized portraits by Xavier Tavera celebrating 150 years of Liberal Arts at the U of M
The University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts (CLA) kicks off its year-long 150th anniversary celebration with the opening of On Purpose: Portrait of the Liberal Arts, an exhibition comprised of 60 new, life-size color portraits by photographer Xavier Tavera (MFA '17) of University of Minnesota faculty, staff, students and alumni celebrating 150 years of the College of Liberal Arts.
On Purpose: Portrait of the Liberal Arts is the stunning result of a commission initiated by the University of Minnesota and John Coleman, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, who invited photographer Xavier Tavera to interpret the diversity of disciplines, ideas, and individuals that collectively shape the purpose of the Liberal Arts, now and into the future. The photographs capture the essence of the liberal arts and examine our purpose. We are students and scholars. Entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and leaders. We unravel the difficult challenges facing modern societies and educate imaginative minds who create tomorrow’s industry-shaping ideas. We train compassionate graduates who lead healthy dialogues.

About Xavier Tavera
After moving from Mexico City to the United States, Xavier Tavera learned what it felt like to be part of a subculture - the immigrant community. Subjected to alienation has transformed the focus of his photographs to share the lives of those who are marginalized. Tavera has shown his work extensively in the Twin Cities, nationally and internationally and is nationally recognized for his meticulous craft and sensitive portrayal of each unique subject. His work is part of the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Plaines Art Museum, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Minnesota History Center and the Weisman Art Museum.
