Modern Pagans/Ancient Realms

The Vine Arts Center, in partnership with the Minneapolis Collective of Pagan Artists, is pleased to present “Modern Pagans/Ancient Realms”, a survey of artists whose work explores pre-modern pasts-- memory, dreams, folklore and hearsay-- for alternate visions of the present and the future.

Show Statement
"Midwestern Paganism is dreaming a different American dream, seeking to spiritually connect with Nature and to ancestral traditions, recovering meaning in old ways and ancient images, but bringing them to new light in the present day. Can the wisdoms of the past inspire different visions for the future? This exhibit proposes a partial answer by allowing glimpses into a largely unseen contemporary tradition, the "intentional village" of modern Pagan imagination.

What does this revival of pre-modern religions contribute to the larger conversation? For these artists, this question has provoked poetic and unexpected responses. From re-interpretations of ancient gods and goddesses in painting and photography, to spirit animals in ceramic and mixed media sculpture, to potent family stories expressed in sculpture and video, the landscape of this hidden culture reveals itself as-- perhaps-- a new beginning. What may have started as an old, old story has become reinvented and new again."
