Kathleen Waterloo debuts new encaustic work at Circa gallery in the North Loop

Encaustic artist, Kathleen Waterloo, will be exhibiting her new paintings during Niner Niner, a solo exhibition at CIRCA Gallery. On view from Saturday, February 20 - Saturday, April 2, the exhibition's opening reception will be held February 20 from 5-8 pm with the artist in attendance. The reception is free and open to the public.

This will be Waterloo's third solo show with CIRCA Gallery. Past inspirations for her wax and pigment infused paintings have included rodeo bucking chutes, airport floor plans and highway travel routes. She elevates these ordinary, everyday observations, "with an approach towards monumental simplicity, given any scale." Trained as an interior architect, Waterloo employs lines - straight, intersecting and interrupted -  to convey her vision. Vibrant colors, embedded within multiple applications of hot wax, are also present; a distinctive look in a medium where muted, subdued palettes are the norm.
Speaking about Niner Niner and its aerial view inspiration, Waterloo cites a recent flight from Chicago, Illinois, to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, "I sketched and took photos of the spectacular landscape below, as aerial views and plan views have always been an integral part of my artwork. The conversations between my pilot son and the air traffic controllers made for great listening along the way and I jotted down some of the more frequent lingo i heard over the course of the trip."
