Jess Hirsch: "Emotional Platings" Artist Talk & Book Launch

An artist talk and book launch for Jess Hirsch's project "Emotional Platings" as part of the "Here and There" series at Soap Factory.

During the month of October, Rethinking Public Spaces artist, Jess Hirsch brought her project Emotional Platings to Willmar, Delano, and Cambridge, MN. Emotional Platings is a series of picnic kits from trees that heal specific emotions, identified in the Bach Flower Essence philosophy developed by Edward Bach in the 1940s. Each picnic kit includes a blanket, servingware crafted by the artist, a notecard with conversational prompts, and a notebook. The public was invited to check out a specific kit in advance, asked to bring food to share, and then was paired with a stranger based on the emotion they had selected. Having grown up in rural Minnesota, Hirsch hoped to explore the rural/urban divide by traveling to these 3 rural towns throughout Minnesota, asking people to check out a kit and explore emotion together.
