Heroes, Myths, & Shadow Figures

Heroes, Myths, & Shadow Figures

Mark Baden presents classical and contemporary interpretations of the Hero's Quest through sculpture.

Mark Baden’s installation of over 20 raku-fired temples draws correlations between Greek mythologies and contemporary tales of the hero’s quest. In these works, Baden has physically merged the reliefs and the statuary motifs of classical Greek sculpture and architecture with Star Wars characters and themes. The tradition of saga has existed since human beginnings. In Heroes, Myths, & Shadow Figures one sees its reach from Homer to Han Solo.

Mark Baden, Professor Emeritus at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul (UNWSP), was drawn to the medium of clay after his first ceramics class as an undergrad in 1972. Not long after, in January of 1973, he took part in a study abroad trip which sparked in him a passion for the ancient world. Baden went on to complete his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, as well as serve UNWSP for a tenure of 32 years. The subjects of his current scholarly research include the historic UNWSP buildings and the stained glass art of Charles J. Connick.
