Fledglings and Seeds: Transformations and New Beginnings

This body of paintings and ceramic sculpture by DeAnne L. Parks is an invitation to view and experience life-changing transitions with the wonder and compassion of a child, regardless of where you stand on an issue.

In Fledglings and Seeds: Transformations and New Beginnings, visual artist DeAnne L Parks explores transitions that have and haven’t yet occurred in our current political, cultural and personal lives. DeAnne’s paintings are bright and her ceramic sculpture whimsical, yet each speaks to a deeper, more significant human issue. Ceramic birds line up to ride in boats like refugees trying to crossover into a new life. An eaglet happily munches on a bag of seeds, unaware of others in need outside of the nest.
In this exhibit, Parks’ draws on her recent, personal experience of circumstance - being gentrified out of her Lowertown studio in 2016 – to help define and demonstrate the deep emotions involved in transition:  Before leaving her Jax studio, Parks used the pages from 16 years of personal, studio notes and journals as the “creative DNA” to build a large, paper mache seed. The seed was transported to her new studio in the Midway, and will transform into an installation for this exhibit.
