A show of new work by artist Tim Tozer

IC: Tim Tozer, 'Tabernacle Road,' 2018, Oil on canvas, 40 x 72”

Born in Portsmouth, UK, Tim Tozer attended the Winchester School of Art and the University of Ulster at Belfast, Northern Ireland. Tozer moved to the U.S. in 1994 when he received the prestigious Andy Warhol Scholarship for study at the New York Academy of Art. After earning his MFA in painting, Tozer taught painting and drawing at Indiana University in Bloomington. He moved to Minneapolis in 2002 and currently teaches painting at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Tozer’s divided time between two countries, the UK and the US, has inspired and provoked his work. As the artist writes, “I’ve lived in the US for half my life, although I remain a citizen of another country. I still dream of a home in England, a home I recognize, even though the logic of the dream folds the city upon itself and mixes it with other places. The facts are wrong, but the truth is whole. Images and feelings pollute each other to make a new thing.” Layers of underpainting permeate the surfaces of Tozer’s canvases, creating a sense of pentimento with textural depth. Familiar scenes are awaked with new color, while others have become faded and distant. The resulting paintings challenge memory and perception, highlighting fragments of both worlds with an abstract sensibility.

The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, March 10th from 2-5 pm. The opening reception and exhibition runs concurrently with New Paintings by Dan Mason. Both shows continue through April 14, 2018. For more information please call 612-377-7800 or visit grovelandgallery.com
