Blue roses | John Largaespada

John Largaespada’s practice is concerned with exploring the computer’s ability to push photography toward a more pure image-making medium reminiscent of painting. Digital manipulation allows him to move from a literal, photographic presentation to imagery that more accurately capture the true emotion of a scene. In the end, the environments portrayed in his work are imagined, not wholly found or staged. 

He draws on opera, paintings, and recently genre themes such as landscape and portrait painting, for the inspiration of his images. Largaespada digitally photographs backgrounds, objects, and costumed people, he then pieces these individual files together to create the final image. 

This series of images expresses the way different pictorial genre can represent the same idea and emotion. In this series the flower represents the person and visa versa. Each image is meant to represent the beauty and tragedy imbedded in every living thing.

John Largaespada has exhibited locally and nationally. He has received two Jerome Foundation grants and a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, his work is also in the permanent collection of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC.
