801 presents the work of Booka B, Jeff Sommers, Michael Thomsen, Karl Herber

About the Artists:
Booka B
is a Twin Cities native who is known for his paintings, design work, calligraphy, DJing and music production. For the upcoming group show he will be displaying a collection of large canvases that capture his distinctive organic style. You can expect paintings filled with whimsical characters, and very tribal, design centric canvases that draw on his love of stark contrast ink on paper drawings. Booka B will also be playing records at the opening. bookab.net

Jeff Sommers has been drawing Gun Heads for 20 years and Squares for 10. He will be sharing this work for the first time.  This small collection of new work is presented as Risograph Prints in suites of 5 and editions of 5.   The gun in every respect dominates the human condition whether it is in the context of the self or the gaze into the shared spaces we occupy.  The Square drawings seek ambitiously to dialogue with the explosion of knowledge in physics and with the work of the artist Gego. Jeff is one of the founders of Izzy's Ice Cream. effsommers.com/flat-art/

Michael Thomsen is an award-winning assemblage sculptor, musician and filmmaker. Thomsen’s approach to filmmaking closely reflects that of his visual artwork, a beautifully converged narrative of mysterious objects, mood and wonder. In his sculpture work, Thomsen combines woodworking techniques, painting, assemblage and electrical wiring with discovered artifacts from thrift stores, flea markets and more—items that hold a human imprint. www.mdthomsen.com

Karl Herber is drawn to purity; a desire to refine each image to its essence, to create as pure an image as possible, but the photos in this show are corrupted digital files.  As a photographer, he doesn’t understand a lot of what he does, but he questions whether comprehension is a prerequisite of expression? karlherber.com
