2018/19 Jerome Project Grant Presentations

Three Minnesota artists selected from 40 proposals

Textile Center is pleased to announce the 2018/19 Jerome Project Grant winners. After a review process involving three esteemed professionals from the textile art field, the jurors selected the winning artists. They are Janet Dixon, Nevis, MN, and Heather MacKenzie and Mary Pow, both from Minneapolis. During the blind selection process, all three artists’ proposals and supporting images were described as “clearly articulated to advance the work of these emerging artists to the next level.”

Dixon has proposed to create an exhibition of work exploring the identity of place through the creation of a series of dimensional maps that move from factual to abstraction. She will be using low immersion dyeing, screen-printing, and flour resist processes.

MacKenzie will create a new series of large-scale weavings, each containing narrative text encrypted in woven structure. Personal stories gathered from self-identified queer and female, trans or non-binary authors who are also artists and makers will inform the work.

Pow will explore the move from product-based work to making art that will allow her to explore philosophical ideas about detangling reality and contradiction while looking at the relationship between creativity and algorithms. Her background in architecture and piecework will inform her body of work.

There will be a culminating exhibition of the projects opening in May, 2019.
